Organ donation is near and dear to Dan and Kim's hearts. After all, had it not been for Dan donating one of his kidneys to Kim, Special K Band would not exist. It's not just a band, though. It's an incredible unexpected journey. Dan and Kim started out as family acquaintances. They share a sister-in-law, but they're totally unrelated. Huh? Yeah, I know. When Dan learned that Kim needed a life-saving kidney transplant, he didn't hesitate to offer one of his own. Dan was actually one of eight people who were tested, and his was the best match. As exciting as the idea was for Kim to be so close to getting her life back, she decided to hold out for a cadaver kidney to spare Dan the risks of surgery. Toward the end of her four years of dialysis treatment, Kim was too weak to hold out any longer. She accepted Dan's offer and the transplant was a success!
About a year and half later, they formed the Special K Band. "K" is for kidney. It made perfect sense. Dan was a drummer and singer for many years, and Kim had always dreamt of becoming a professional singer. They joined their passion for music and their talents and since then have pleased many crowds up and down the east coast. They even wrote a CD together called "Gift of Life" (see below.) It comprises eight original songs ranging from rock to dance to a beautiful R&B ballad. The theme song "Gift of Life" will lift your spirit and encourage you to never give up hope. Special K Band performs for the Gift of Life Donor Program of Philadelphia at their numerous events throughout the year. The biggest event is the Donor Dash held every April at the Philadelphia Art Museum where they've entertained thousands of people for the last seven years. It's an amazing time for them and the organ and tissue donation community. You're invited to come join them and celebrate the gift of life this April. It's the gift that keeps on giving.
